Our Story

On March 6, 2007, Jeremy and Amy Jacobs were told that their 13 month old daughter Ava had a massive brain tumor. The crush of helplessness, confusion, and pressure to make decisions quickly put an unimaginable strain on the family as they struggled to cope with every parent’s worst nightmare.

By pure chance, Jeremy overhead a discussion about a new and improved form of - Proton Therapy Treatment – that would ultimately save Ava’s life. Ava is now an active and healthy 9 year old who has beaten the odds. But as grateful as Jeremy and Amy are for the health and life of their daughter, they remain grief-stricken for families suffering through the same agony, and don’t believe that the survival of children diagnosed with cancer should be left to chance. With information, financial and emotional support, lives can be saved, and families held together.

You can help.
In 2008 Jeremy and Amy founded "BraveHearts for Kids" North Dakota to help local families in crisis due to pediatric cancer. Your donation now to Project "Brave Future" will help them expand the scope of BraveHearts' outreach to a national level, broadening the organization's ability to reach families across the country with desperately needed help. Children are dying that don't need to die, and families are needlessly suffering from lack of networked information and support. Please help by donating today.

Why Now?
Last year, 15,780 children were diagnosed with cancer in the US alone. That’s over 40 per day…and that number is growing. Advances in treatment are happening at a rapid pace. However, as Ava’s story makes clear, information on the most advanced treatments isn't always available to parents at the most critical decision making-times. In addition, other factors such as lack of sufficient insurance coverage and difficulty arranging travel or relocating to a treatment hospital, put children’s lives at risk.

Add to that the enormous strain – both emotional and financial – that such a nightmare puts on families, and the need for support becomes clear. No one understands the ordeal of pediatric cancer better than a family that's been through the crisis already. Simply put, the combination of timely information, emotional support, and financial assistance makes a huge difference for families dealing with pediatric cancer and increases the survival odds for children like Ava.

Become part of this inspiring cause and make a difference for families touched by pediatric cancer. Donate and help spread the word about Project: "Brave Future".  Your actions today, will help save a life tomorrow.
